Doctora (PhD) en Ciencia Política por el Instituto Universitario Europeo, Florencia, Italia. Es profesora asociada en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile y directora del Centro de Estudios Asiáticos UC.
Su investigación y enseñanza se centran en el área de Relaciones Internacionales y seguridad internacional, con énfasis en las dinámicas regionales de la seguridad. Sus temas de interés son los conflictos inter-estatales, la cooperación en seguridad, los roles de las fuerzas armadas y las relaciones civil-militares. Geográficamente, se focaliza en América latina y Asia-Pacífico.
Durante 2015-2016 ha sido investigadora visitante en la University of Queensland, School of Political and International Studies, Brisbane, Australia. También ha colaborado con otras universidades y centros de investigación de prestigio internacional, entre ellos el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Madrid, S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, Universidad de los Andes de Bogotá, Colombia, y el German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA).
Actualmente trabaja en un libro sobre comunidades de estados no beligerantes y un proyecto (Fondecyt) sobre operaciones de paz. Además, Nicole es co-editora de la revista Contemporary Security Policy.
