Rodrigo Mardones is Full Professor at the Institute of Political Science, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. He is also Research Associate at the Millennium Institute on Violence and Democracy (VioDemos), and Researcher at the Center for the Study of Policies and Practices in Education (CEPPE UC).

He obtained the degrees of B.A. in History from P. Catholic University of Chile (1994); Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (1998); Master (M.Phil.), and Doctor (Ph.D.) in Political Science from New York University (2005).

He has taught and researched issues of public policy, Chilean politics, and educational policy. He has also developed a substantive line of research on political fraternity in its connection with the quality of democracy and citizenship education.

Mardones joined the UC’s Political Science Department in 2006. Previously, he worked at FLACSO-Chile (2001-2003), Alberto Hurtado University (2003-2005), and as an adjunct professor in the Master's program in Management Public Policy at the University of Chile’s Department of Industrial Engineering (2000-2005). 

He has participated in consulting projects for several international organizations: World Bank (Poverty Reduction and Economic Management), United Nations Habitat, Inter-American Development Bank, and United Nations Development Program (Chile). He has also been a consultant in several ministries of the Chilean government: the General Secretariat of the Presidency, the Ministry of the Interior (SUBDERE), and the Ministry of Education (UCE and CPEIP). He has guided postgraduate student consulting projects offered to the Chilean Association of Municipalities, Fundación Chile (Educarchile), and Educación 2020. 

Starting in 2007 he was director of the UC Political Science Master's program, and he was elected Chair of the UC Institute of Political Science (2010-2016). He actively participated in the creation of the UC School of Government, including its Master's program in Public Policy, and its undergraduate degree in Public Administration.

He has been a referee for academic journals including American Political Science Review, British Journal of Political Science, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Latin American Politics and Society, and Publius: The Journal of Federalism.
