Cristóbal Rovira Kaltwasser es Doctor (Ph.D.) en Ciencia Política, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Alemania) y Sociólogo de la Universidad de Chile. Antes de incorporarse al Instituto, fue Profesor Titular de la Universidad Diego Portales (UDP), Marie-Curie Research Fellow de la Universidad de Sussex e investigador post-doctoral en el Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB) y Nuffield College de la Universidad de Oxford. Ha sido profesor visitante en la Scuola Normale Superiore en Florencia en Italia, la Universidad de Uppsala en Suecia, Science Po en Paris, la Universidad Libre de Berlín y el German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA). Su área de especialización es la política comparada, con particular énfasis en Europa y América Latina.
Su trabajo se enfoca en el estudio del populismo en perspectiva comparada, sobre todo su relación con el sistema democrático. Se desempeña como investigador asociado del Centro de Estudios de Conflicto y Cohesión Social (COES), es investigador principal del proyecto FONDECYT regular (2022-2025) titulado “The Populist Radical Right in Chile in Comparative Perspective” y está a cargo del proyecto “The Far-Right in Latin America” financiado por Open Society Foundations (OSF). Actualmente es Director de Investigación y Posgrado de la Facultad de Historia, Geografía y Ciencia Política.
